A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste

The most painful part of our lives is how we think. But thinking is part of our makeup right? We think without knowing that we’re thinking. We go to sleep in thought and we wake up in thought, but we need to be aware of our thoughts. We need not waste our mind on thoughtless things.

You’ve heard the slogan. “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.”

The iconic slogan, dreamt up by the advertising agency Young & Rublican goes back more than four decades. It was meant for promotion but it rings true so I’m using it here, because I have a point to make.

The line, as you know, has seeped into our culture. It’s been appropriated, copied, parodied and retold.

“A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste” has become some of the best values. A belief in equal opportunity, in human dignity and hope.

Our mind is rooted in insight, in emotion, in a great story that has the power to free us.

It is the source of all creativity and enlightenment. It is terrible when we use our source for anything other than to build on or train into something useful that can benefit us as well as humanity.

Exploring and understanding your feelings, knowing what thoughts are out there and then learning what to keep and what to discard from your mind is a challenge most of us have faced.

But there is a small difference, a very minor difference.

“A Trained,” mind verses a “Un-trained mind.”

That determining factor is “mindfulness.”

This can be very easily achieved with the help of mindful meditation.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing.

We can train our mind to stop injecting idiotic thoughts that put us in a wasteful state of mind.

We can think above the nonsense, and be fully aware, making wise decisions.

Let’s not
